A Favorite Place: The Samaria Gorge

This summer I embarked on an exciting adventure to visit the Greek island of Crete. A good friend of mine has a family house on the island, and I spent a week roaming with her under the Mediterranean sun. We swam in crystal blue water, walked along pink sand beaches, ate our fill of delicious Greek food, wandered the streets of Chania, and generally enjoyed a wonderful visit together.

My favorite experience during the trip was conquering the Samaria Gorge, the longest gorge in Europe. For close to six hours, Sophie and I hiked from the top of the gorge down and along its base; the entire distance stretches 16 kilometers. It was magical to be surrounded by the natural beauty of the gorge and to discover the secrets of the landscape with every twist and turn along the path.

    This is so cool, Joni! Could it foretell a project about Greece or Crete or Minoan art for this class...? You've been to the place, and now you could tell its stories. Beautiful! Minoan culture... so much is a mystery, waiting for imagination to fill in the gaps! :-)

Long ago, a man named Sribatsa and his beautiful wife Ayana set out on a journey to traverse the lands of the earth. The evil eye had been cast upon Sribatsa due to an unfortunate run in with Saturn, the god of bad luck, and he and his wife had decided to leave their home in search of safe lodgings until the eye turned away. But one day as they were making their way through the woods, a horrible fate befell Ayana.  While Sribatsa and Ayana were crossing a river among the trees, Ayana slipped on a rock and fell into the water. She did not know how to swim, but the waters had mercy and did not drown her; her beauty was too rare and too pure to submerge forever beneath the river's rippling surface.
